Commandment #10—Thou Shalt Practice the CANEI Principle
In the late 1940s and 1950s, the Japanese were recovering from World War II and struggling to survive. They started creating items to be sold overseas and always stamped the items as “Made in Japan.” During those times, whenever people in America saw the “Made in Japan” stamp, they knew the items were of inferior quality and could be purchased inexpensively. This practice went on through the 1950s and early 1960s. In the late 1960s, something changed.
Dr. Edward Deming, a management guru, went to Japan and taught the Japanese an innovative concept called the “CANEI Principle”; CANEI is an acronym that stands for Constant and Never Ending Improvement. It means making a commitment to never be satisfied and to keep bettering your best on a daily basis. Within a decade of embracing this principle, the Japanese had gone from worst to first! Japanese electronics and automobiles dominated the marketplace, and still do so today.
Five-star organizations embrace this principle. This commitment to constant and never-ending improvement requires each person to ask: How can I do better tomorrow than I did today? Those who achieve great things in life understand the power of self-development and make a commitment to constant and never-ending improvement.
If you were able to achieve perfection, where would you go from there? Constant and never-ending improvement allows us to continue to improve as we strive for excellence. Once we achieve excellence, we are automatically compelled to try to constantly improve and better our best!
Great organizations never become satisfied. To create a five-star organization, it is critical to make a commitment to the CANEI Principle: constant and never-ending improvement. Get started today!
